    Description

1801 S.224 Draped Bust Large cent, old ANACS Soapbox VF20.  This is a choice, original, beautifully brown and smooth coin, and it is also a Mint Error, having been struck on a tapered planchet.  Can we prove that?  No...but, we'll bet quite a bit that the weight of this coin is a reasonable amount below standard.  There is NO striking detail at upper left obverse, and the corresponding area of lower left reverse (only RTY of LIBERTY shows, and much of the fraction and UNI is not present).  We promise, none of this was done post-minting...this is the way the coin was struck and left the mint.  Let's consider the possible reasons.  It could be the product of filled dies, as grease or other foreign substances are known to produce such an effect.  But not on both sides, directly opposite one another.  The chances of that happening are essentially nil.  Here, the logical explanation is that this planchet was punched from the end of a strip, and that the thickness of that strip was tapered a bit, such that this planchet went from normal thickness to thin.  The dies could not make proper contact with the too thin portion, and here we are.  A cool, rare and really nice example!  Enjoy.
There are new books on the Large cent series you should be aware of, and we can supply you with copies of each.  Serious collector and researcher Robert Powers has just published two brand new volumes: "US Large Cents, 1793-1814, Variety Identification Guide", and "US Large Cents, 1816-1839, Variety Identification Guide."  Powers' works are not intended to take the place of Sheldon or Newcomb, rather they are adjunct to those works.  Various shortcuts, tips and a bit of a different way of looking at attribution is what Powers does best, and we find additional information, from any and every source, to be very helpful.  Please see our other ebay listings, or our website to order yours today!
