Description
A VERY rare and early Dayak Headhunters sword Mandau. Very early blades were cherished and passed down through the generations. Hilt fittings, scabbards and side knives (pisau raut) were replaced. The Most important part of a mandau was the blade which carried the history of its exploits with it and was (and still is) considered to possessed by a spirit forged into the blade when it was made.It is very likely that this blade is 18th century or earlier. This is a Very special mandau.
The blade has edge nicks from combat, the black patina (which should Never be removed) is a sign of its great age.
It has a profusion of inlaid brass dots indicating its very special quality.
Only Very rarely does a mandau with such an ancient blade come up for sale. This would have been treasured for generations within a dayak family.
