    Description

Antique late 19th century cast iron and solid oak wood stand for a large heavy book such as a dictionary or family bible.
Not marked or labeled; maker unknown, although it closely resembles other stands I've seen made by Columbia. There is a rack below the main holder which provides storage for smaller books. The legs have their original casters and collapse for transportation by lifting the fitted iron collar that surrounds them where they meet the center rod. The height and tilt are adjustable with large thumbscrews. The lightly worn paint is greenish black and appears to be original, or at least quite old. There is minor rust here and there, which has not done any serious damage and I believe it would not be difficult to clean. Oak holder has light surface scratches and soil, and functions well. One of the small springs is missing from the release lever on the back of one oak leaf, but in my experience this has had no negative effect on the functionality. One end of the iron cradle between the oak leaves is flatter than the other end, which is possibly a manufacturing flaw. Screws all appear to be original or are at least of the period. I purchased the stand from an estate so am not certain of its history or whether it has ever been repaired or refinished. I have not done any cleaning or repairs.
The stand will be partially disassembled and shipped all together in one box to minimize shipping cost. No tools are required to reassemble it. Local pickup also available. I have been packaging and shipping large, fragile and/or oddly shaped antiques for the past 5 years with great success and I welcome any questions about my packing and shipping methods!
