Description
This sword is in very good condition. The sword itself is pristine. The presentation base could use some minor cleaning of the velvet surface. There are some white surface scratches on the wood base but it overall is in very good condition for its age. Wrought of tempered steel in Toledo, Spain and accented with 24 karat gold electroplate, this sword is authentically detailed.
It was purchased from the Franklin Mint in the 1991 for 0.
This sword is of the Model 1860 staff-officer-type.
It has a long, slender, straight, diamond-shaped blade made of tempered steel. One side is ornately decorated with designs that include three figures: A United States infantryman with rifled-musket and fixed bayonet, a Zouave seated, and a bugler signalling his comrades. The opposite side illustrates an officer observing through field glasses, a staff officer and an infantryman with his rifle-musket at right shoulder arms.
The grip is decorated with a Roman helmet and a United States shield flanked with flags and crossed cannon. The other side is decorated with a fish scale pattern.
The gilded vase-shaped pommel has an eagle on one side and a plain shield on the other. The cap of the pommel is decorated with the heads of four classical figures, while the knuckle guard has both sides decorated with thunderbolts.
The counterguard is double-heart shape with the American eagle flanked by three standards on one side and a plain reverse side, which hinged to the quillon. The hilt is embellished with 24 karat gold.The sword is 36" long, and the case is 8.5" wide by 43" long.
