Limited edition Prince Charles and Lady Diana royal wedding commemorative court sword, one of the worldwide limited edition, produced by Wilkinson Sword Limited of London in 1981. Wilkinson Sword manufactured only 1000 of these dress blades to commemorate the royal wedding, 800 of which were distributed in the United Kingdom and 100 each sent abroad to Australia and Canada. This piece is
numbered # 0400 on the spine and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
The sword is of traditional British court sword design.
Double-edged unsharpened blade is of the finest steel tapering to a fine spear point, hardened, tempered and polished.
The obverse face of the blade is crisply engraved / acid etched “To Commemorate the Marriage of The Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer - 29 July 1981” centered between the Prince of Wales’s Feathers on the left, Lady Diana’s own coat-of-arms on the right and elegant floral designs on either side. The ricasso is marked by the Royal Coat of Arms and the Wilkinson Sword logo, reading “By Appointment / to Her Majesty / Queen / Elizabeth II / Sword Cutlers / Wilkinson Sword (logo) / Made / In England”. The blade features an exquisite mirror-bright finish on both faces.
The magnificent hilt with twin knuckle bows bears the full christian names of Prince of Wales and Lady Diana. These sweep up symbolically to join at the apex. The pommel features two medallions in fine Birmingham enamel. One depicts the Prince of Wales feathers, the other the Brides coat-of-arms.
The grip is wrapped in twisted silver wire and the sword finishes with a bright silver bullion sword knot.
The swords heart shaped shell guard is engraved with a motif combining the four floral emblems of the British Isles - Rose, Daffodil,Thistle and Shamrock. Prince Charles personal coat-of-arms in enamel surrounds this design. The hilt retains strong amounts of silver finish with some of the recessed areas of the relief gently toning to a distinguished black patina contrasting the bright raised details. The inside of the guard exhibits a few burnished areas of silver-blue tarnish. The sword knot is in immaculate condition. Masterfully crafted by England’s finest cutlers for the highest-profile wedding of the century, this splendid piece of royal memorabilia is a marvelous sword in its own right and not to be missed.
