Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, was born into a royal family with the name Siddhartha Gautama. Growing up, he was exceptionally intelligent and compassionate. During his process of searching, Siddhartha lived an ascetic life, studying and meditating using the words of various teachers as his guide. However, whatever he tried, Siddartha could not reach the level of insight he sought, until one night when Siddhartha sat under the Bodhi tree and went into deep meditation. He achieved the state of unconditional and lasting happiness: the state of enlightment, of buddhahood.
