    Description

Here is a very close copy of the U.S. Model 1917 Naval Cutlass Sword with Leather Sheath.  All metal is nickel plated as if for a special unit or guard and would have been privately purchased. The black checkered grip is a hard polymer type composite and is black in color and held by 3 screws that show age patina, rust. Small chip on the grip, left side by screw closest to pommel. Just above that there is some minor damage and smaller chip/crack. All is tight.  Sword measures 29.75" overall and the fullered blade is 23.75" in length with a clip point at the end. Blade shows some scattered scratches mostly on the left side near the front. These cutlass' remind me of the Dutch Klewang swords. Blade ricasso is marked, "USN" with the opposite side marked with a "knights head" over "WKC" (WEYERSBURG KIRSCHBAUM & COMPANY) over "SOLINGEN" over "STAINLESS".  This variant is very well made and functional.  Leather sheath with brass end point and throat. It is in very good condition showing some light wear and use. The leather strap at the throat is torn and partially hanging off. Needs to be re-stitched. I have a rubber band wrapped around it to hold it in place.  A very nice piece.
